. it is boarded up and there is a big sign that says it is part of this project. it has been like that for most of the year. metro's latest report card is not getting high marks. it is due out today. dozens of escalators are out throughout the system this morning. the escalator problem came to light last october when the brakes failed at l'enfant plaza during the jon stewart sanity rally sending dozens of riders tumbling to the bottom. in may, the number of escalators out of service was 103 out of nearly 600 escalators. today, it is around 80. >> i wish they would invest the money in getting the things done faster. >> many of the 82 are out of service because we're rebuilding them, not because they're broken. >> reporter: well, there are other issues in this report card including metro police officers complaining that their radio service is working. sometimes, sometimes not. it is so bad some officers refuse to go to some stations when they have no radio service. that could be a big, huge safety issue. also some rail car reliability that can cause some delays. doors not opening an

start in the shower. no need to spend big money on salon shampoos or name brand body washes. you're paying more for the frig rance and beauty experts will tell you the scents get washed down the drain. as long as the shower supplies have the soap they need, any brand is going to keep you clean. conditioner, that's another story entirely. ladies don't, get mad at me. now, we're moving to the medicine cabinet. pick any generic medication. over-the-counter generics do the same job as the name brand but they also save you money. products like aspirin and ibuprofen. they have simple recipes so the name brand is going to cost you 40% more. 40% more! another place to avoid name brands, household cleansers. we have a variety of spray bottles but in reality, you only need one. as long as you have the all- purpose cleaner, you're all set. some specialists say as long as you have vinegar and water, you don't need chemicals. they say that's the best way to keep the windows squeaky-clean. the candle industry, it makes billions. the smell may be great but do you really need the $25 candle? you're

liquor store. obviously a big police and fire rescue presence out there. we're being told obviously they're taking away lanes as needed. asking drivers to avoid this part of u street near 13th. no telling how long they plan to be out there. let's move it over to our maps and show you how other parts of the region are shaping up. we begin in virginia and take a look at 66. eastbound travel is moving smoothly. we are seeing a little bit of that volume around 234. over to the maps again and this time, we'll shift our focus to 95. for those of you making the northbound trip, looking good at it, continuing on to fairfax all the way up to the mixing bowl on to 395 heading northbound. on the outer loop, travel times in maryland from 95 to 27 0, still in the green look at about 10 minutes from 95 to 270. southbound 95, no problems to report at this time to the capital beltway. d.c. 295, unlike yesterday morning at this time, we're moving to the 11th street bridge. still ahead, the very latest on the fire activity on u street. i'll have that coming up. mike, around 6:10. over to you. >>> we'

time to get something big done. the president made it clear he wants to do something substantial. you know, when you look at in the past with agreements for divided government, it takes leadership on both sides. >> they are talking about cutting spending over the next 10 years, adding $6 trillion to the debt. the real deal to get us in balance would be an amendment to the constitution. without that, we will just talk to each other and run america in the ground. >> the plan for the balanced- budget amendment is expected to pass the house tomorrow but expected to fail in the senate. >>> a man accused of swapping identities in order to escape the u.s. marshals is due in court today. james brewer is accused killer. he reportedly switched i.d. bracelets with another prisoner at the holding facility in the dc superior court. the swap allowed him to walk away. he is accused of killing an elderly man last month. >>> an ocean city police officer is recovering after he was run over and drug by a car driven bay suspected drug dealer. the officer should be okay. it happened early saturday. police

like 85 already with the dew points jumping into the 70s. high pressure, big area of high pressure in the upper levels of the atmosphere bringing the heat and humidity on either side of that, we've got storms to talk about. don in the gulf of mexico. winds at 50 miles per hour. center is actually up here. i know this looks pretty impressive but the center is actually up here tracking to just north of brownsville the way it's looking and then on the northern edge of this ridge we've got storms in kansas and missouri. over toward illinois and then this severe thunderstorm watch box from detroit over to buffalo and erie. the storms will stay north and east of us for the most part today although late this afternoon, one or two of them could slip in here. 102 today, that would be a record. tonight the 7 #s to about 80. tomorrow not as hot or humid. 93 on sunday and look rain chances so low i actually removed them from the forecast. then next week, it's still hot and still talking about temperatures well up in the 90s. come on computer be my friend here. but wellup in the 90s. here we go. w

storms coming through. last night the storms came through, and they came through in a big way. a lot of hail. inch and a half in diameter hail reported. damage on the g.w. parkway. that's gone, and this morning we are left with mild temperatures. muggy upper 60s to lower 70s across the board. angie is off, but kris sneed is monitoring minor incidents here. >> minor problems, mostly in the district with the live shot off capital, a couple of down trees for us to watch out for. it's causing problems on the roadway, and poor driver's car is smashed with the tree there. we also have a report of canal being closed because of a down tree there. going over to florida avenue, westbound florida avenue from 3 3rd and rhode island avenue, we have an accident there. crews are working on the scene. police are directing you around the accident seen there. maryland, the outer loop, there's a few cars on the road. people trying to get to the early spots, and they are watching the fireworks this morning, and then over to 95 in virginia, no problems on the northbound area between the prince william pa
